Norwegian singer-songwriter Terje Gravdal releases Hostage in My Home, the 11th of 15 single releases, featuring his daughter Frida Hidle Gravdal. This deeply personal song is dedicated to his late aunt and all those who feel like hostages in their own homes.
The song’s origins trace back to 1997 when Gravdal’s aunt began her diary with the haunting words, “A life in hell and anxiety.” Over the years, she filled 38 diaries, documenting her painful reality—caring for two sons suffering from severe psychiatric disorders. Her struggle was relentless, and tragedy struck when one of her sons later took the life of a random woman at Haugesund cemetery.
With Hostage in My Home, Gravdal honors her resilience and search for inner peace. The song carries a weight of sorrow but also a longing for understanding and remembrance. Having his daughter Frida join him adds an even deeper emotional layer. Frida, passionate about music and human psychology, brings warmth and sincerity to the song’s message.
In addition to this version, Gravdal has also recorded Hostage in My Home with Julie Love—his late aunt’s granddaughter—both as a duet and as a solo version by Julie. Each rendition brings a unique perspective to this deeply moving tribute.
