Award-winning multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Bird has release her highly anticipated new single, “Daddy”. The track is the first glimpse of her upcoming EP, Heads or Tales, due for release in late Spring 2025, and is a stunning exploration of familial roles and the complex emotional dynamics that occur within families.
“Daddy” is a masterful slice of Americana and contemporary folk, featuring Bird’s signature sweeping string soundscapes and delicate finger-plucked guitar melodies. Co-written with long time collaborator Dire Straits guitarist Hal Lindes, this song looks at the complex relationship between a Father and his Son and what happens due to a fundamental lack of love shown between them. ‘Daddy’ weaves atmospheric acoustic dream-pop with contemporary folk, solidifying Bird’s reputation as a one-woman force in the music world.
Recorded between London and Nashville Tennessee, it features an all-star American band including Country Award winning guitarist Ilya Toshinsky and Rascal Flatts’ musician and producer Jay DeMarcus on bass.
Speaking on ‘Daddy’, Bird shares: “This is a love song. However, it is not about how much love someone feels but how little. How a fundamental lack of love when someone is young may create a driving a desire to achieve, that they might have great financial or worldly success but are left unable to ever fill the empty void tenderness should occupy..
It’s about how that void can travel and become passed down from generation to generation, mutating subtly along the way, causing chains of repeating negative events that are near impossible to break”. Bird’s unique sonic identity, marked by her classical training and genre-defying versatility, shines brightly in this latest release.
