In The Dark Park steps into the spotlight with their debut album, Understory, offering a rich, immersive sonic experience that showcases the band’s unique blend of organic and electronic influences. Following the release of two singles—“Understory” (July 2024) and “Today Yesterday” (August 2024)—the full album introduces 11 additional tracks that carve out a new space in music.
While the band members have each contributed to various musical projects over the years, Understory is their first collaboration, and it marks the beginning of a new creative chapter. The chemistry among the members is unmistakable, with Susanne Bell’s powerful, evocative vocals anchoring the sound. Her voice, reminiscent of Grace Slick’s emotive, husky timbre, pulls listeners into every moment of the album.
The band’s approach to songwriting is a seamless fusion of organic instrumentation and electronic
textures. Understory weaves together elements of jazz fusion, grunge-inspired guitar riffs, synth-driven atmospheres, and layered harmonies. The result is a genre-defying sound that explores emotional depth, nostalgia, and the free-spirited energy of the Pacific Northwest.
The album’s eclectic mix is both introspective and expansive, drawing from the sounds of the 80s and 90s that influenced the band’s formation while constantly pushing musical boundaries. With tracks that evoke both dark, atmospheric moods and unexpected bursts of energy, Understory is a reflection of the band’s creative experimentation and their desire to create a sound that evolves with each note.
“We embrace the unexpected, and we love mixing genres in ways that surprise even us,” says the band. “Understory is about pushing ourselves to explore new sounds and emotions. It’s a journey that challenges us as musicians, and we hope it invites listeners to experience something unique and unforgettable.”
In The Dark Park is carving their own path, and with Understory, they’re ready to share their distinctive vision with the world.
